Why cruise from the UK?
Cruising is more popular with UK and Irish travellers than ever: CLIA reports a record 2.54 million ocean cruises in 2025, up 7% on 2024. The Mediterranean (34.5% of passengers) and Northern Europe (27.2%) are the favourite regions, and seven nights is the most common length. Sailing round-trip from a UK port, often called a "no-fly" cruise, means you can drive or take the train to the ship.
UK departure ports
| Port | Who sails from here | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Southampton | By far the busiest UK cruise port: home to P&O Cruises, Cunard, MSC and Princess, with seasonal sailings from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and others | The widest choice: fjords, Canaries, Med, Northern Europe, transatlantic |
| Dover | A rotating mix of lines on Northern Europe and Med sailings (lines vary by season) | The South East; Northern Europe and Baltic |
| Liverpool | Fred. Olsen (Bolette) and Ambassador are the regular home-porting lines; many others call | The North West; British Isles, fjords, Iceland, Canaries |
| Newcastle (Port of Tyne) | Mainly Fred. Olsen and Ambassador | The North East; Norway is close |
| London Tilbury | Ambassador (year-round base) and Viking | London and Essex; Northern Europe, Spain and Portugal |
| Greenock (Glasgow) | Mainly a port of call; UK-departing sailings from here are occasional | Scotland; check the current season's programme |
The big lines in brief
- P&O Cruises: Britain's biggest home-grown line, based in Southampton, with a very British feel.
- Cunard: classic ocean liners from Southampton, including transatlantic crossings to New York.
- MSC Cruises: big, modern ships from Southampton, often with keen headline fares, plus its Yacht Club suites.
- Royal Caribbean and Norwegian: large resort ships with seasonal UK departures; much of their programme sails from Mediterranean or US ports, so they suit fly-cruises too.
- Virgin Voyages: adults-only. Its UK departures vary by season and we couldn't confirm a regular 2026 UK home port, so check its current schedule.
Typical itineraries from UK ports
| Itinerary | Typical length | Example prices |
|---|---|---|
| Norwegian fjords (Bergen, Geiranger, Stavanger and more) | 7 nights is classic; some sailings are 10–14 | 7-night Southampton sailings in 2026 listed from about £749pp (P&O Iona) and from £799pp (MSC Virtuosa) |
| Canary Islands (often with Lisbon or Madeira) | Usually 12–14 nights, because of the sailing time from the UK | Example: a 14-night P&O Arvia sailing via Tenerife (Oct 2026) listed from £799pp inside, £1,249pp balcony |
| Mediterranean (Spain, France, Italy) | About 14 nights or more round-trip from the UK; 7 nights if you fly out and join in the Med | Varies widely; compare live |
| Baltic & Scandinavian capitals (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn) | Usually 12–14 nights | Varies widely; compare live |
Prices are per person, based on two sharing, from agent and line listings checked in October 2026. They're examples, not quotes, and change all the time.
How prices compare
- Count the whole cost. Headline fares rarely include gratuities, drinks packages, Wi-Fi or excursions; add these before comparing lines.
- No-fly vs fly-cruise. Sailing from the UK skips flights and baggage fees but uses sea days getting there. A fly-cruise reaches the Med faster but adds flights and hotels.
- School holidays cost more. Term-time and shoulder-season sailings are usually better value.
- Same cabin, different agents. Agents often add perks like onboard credit or parking on the same fare, so compare a couple.
How to choose
- Start with the itinerary, not the ship. Choose the ports you want, then check how many sea days there are.
- Pick the nearest port. Liverpool, Newcastle or Tilbury can save a long drive to Southampton.
- Match the ship to you. Big resort ships suit families; smaller ships suit port-focused trips; Cunard suits a classic liner feel.
- Check the season. Fjords run roughly May–September; the Canaries suit autumn to spring.
- Compare the total. Include extras, transfers and parking before you decide.
